Newly founded student initiative wants better integration of international exchange students into university and student life at UW/H.
Von: Uni Witten Herdecke
UW/H students Johanna Mayrshofer and Alexandra Chantal Mirek have founded a new student initiative: the Witten International Network (WIN). The idea is to improve the integration of international exchange students at all UW/H faculties into university life and student activities. Based on personal experience with periods abroad, the organizers set great store by personal contacts and an atmosphere of warm hospitality.
Alexandra Chantal Mirek: “All those who honour hospitality, worship cultural diversity and dream of travels are well aware that internationality is not a passion that ends abruptly with a permanent home and time-consuming responsibilities such as studies. Enjoying a glass of wine with friends, we often revel in the memories of past trips abroad: how wonderful that we got a quick grasp of the language, how overwhelming the cultural impressions, how inspiring to see far more than the things described in conventional guide books.” She underlines that all these highlights and specific moments are closely linked with special people we meet, and this is what the new initiative plans to convey to guest students.
Ten international exchange students on average come to Witten/Herdecke University per semester, a very manageable number compared to state universities. Mirek: “Exchange students can profit from being personally taken care of. But the danger is that you go abroad with the intention to meet people and find there is no dense network of other exchange students where you could rely on support from people in a similar situation. And this is exactly where we plan to help.”
